Makkah Masjid
also Mecca Masjid
Mecca Masjid is one of India’s largest mosques, begun under Muhammad Quli Qutb Shah beside Charminar. Granite halls and a vast courtyard still serve Friday congregations in the Old City.
- Among the largest mosque courtyards in India
- Construction begun by Muhammad Quli; completed under later Qutb Shahi / Mughal phases
- Named for bricks said to include soil from Mecca in the central arch
- Active place of worship adjacent to Charminar’s ceremonial axis
History
Work began in the late 16th / early 17th century under Muhammad Quli Qutb Shah and continued across dynastic change. The mosque’s scale announced Hyderabad as a major Deccan capital and pilgrimage-adjacent city.
Architecture
Enormous cut-granite columns, a wide prayer hall and an open courtyard define the complex. Tombs of later rulers sit within the grounds, tying worship to dynastic memory.
